5th Grade Curriculum

Christian Studies

 

Christian Studies is not just head knowledge, but more importantly a heart  knowledge  for the Lord.  Christian studies is not just a subject but a time to nurture the faith that is growing inside each child.  Students will hear God’s Law and His Grace.   Using the Bible, students will see the sinful rebellion of His people and as learn to identify our own rebellion toward God.  We will also see the mercy and forgiveness that God shows to us through Jesus’ sacrifice.

Students will have memory work throughout the year using a variety of Bible verses which help create an understanding of God and His plan for us.   We will be using the ESV (English Standard Version) Bible.

 

Literature - CIA

 

CIA stands for Collect, Interpret, Apply.  This is the reading curriculum we are using in 3rd—5th grade.  This program pairs high interest books with tested reading strategies to:

·         Increase love of reading for ALL students

·         Increase comprehension

·         Increase interest in books

·         Increase opportunities for collaboration and goal-setting

 

Social Studies
The 5th grade curriculum for social studies focuses on our country’s early beginnings starting with the early Native Americans and then moves to early European exploration.  Students then walk through the colonization of America and the development and beginnings of our country.  The curriculum continues to move through American history.  We will study important American documents such as the Declaration of  Independence and the Constitution.  Students will  develop an understanding of several themes throughout the content, such as: commonality and diversity, conflict and cooperation, continuity and change, individualism and interdependence, and interaction within different environments.

 

Science

 

In Science we cover several different areas of science:  Life, Earth, and Physical.

 Life Science:

Human Growth and Development: 

In divided sessions boys and girls will learn about the changes their bodies are going through.  The instruction will be from a Christian perspective.  Parents will receive email communications on the content and class discussions during this unit.

 

Bethlehem also uses the resources of the Battelle Science Center.  The two hands on science kits that are used in 5th grade are:

Writing and Language Arts

 

In writing, students will use a variety of strategies to work through the writing process such as brainstorming, and using graphic organizers, outlines, and rough drafts in order to create a final draft.  Students will develop a variety of techniques in developing structured sentences, paragraphs, and essays.

Spanish

 

5th graders will have an opportunity to develop their Spanish vocabulary twice a week.  Students will learn Spanish using a variety of activities and games.

 

Technology

 

Technology is a tool which 5th graders will be using in many of the curricular areas.  Students will continue to develop their skills in word processing, use of spreadsheets, and create PowerPoint presentations, and build skills in picture editing .  Students will create reports, essays, PowerPoint book reports, graphs and tables.  Students will learn how to use Google Docs and how to create a “share” to a file.  Students will learn how to effectively use technology and how to apply it in their daily lives. 

 

Outdoor Education

 

Every spring the 5th graders travel to Camp Lutherhaven—Shoshone for an outdoor education experience.  The 5th graders will be learning about wildlife, plants, and orienteering skills.  5th graders will also have activities that encourage team building and problem solving.  A highlight of the trip will be climbing a real rock wall using a harness, ropes, hands and helmet.

 

D.A.R.E.

 

The City of Kennewick provides the D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) to schools throughout Kennewick.  The course, consists of 10 one hour sessions by a Kennewick DARE officer. This program provides knowledge and skills that students need in order to resist drug and alcohol abuse.
